Amy Sigil: ITS Level 1 THE BEGINNING!
(Two-Day Workshop)

Have you always wanted to try ITS? Here's your chance! Improvisational Tribal Style is a bellydance fusion improvisational format used to build community and technique among dancers. This workshop will start at the very beginning of the slow and fast vocabulary. Don't miss this opportunity to add more to your tool box! All levels welcome, must be able to play with others!

Ashley Lopez: Maniacal Layering
(Intermediate to Advanced)

This is a high-energy class, not designed for the faint of heart! Expect to sweat. Which muscles are used for hip locks, or chest pops? What about twisting the hips, or chest slides? Sharpen your isolations and learn to multitask by putting them on top of one another in this workshop. We will be working through the anatomy of each lock and isolation so that you’re aware of which muscles are used to fuel the movement. And if you don’t get it right away, don’t worry, we’ll do each move enough times so that the burning tells you what you’re working!

What is layering? How in the world does one ever figure out how to do two of these things at once? Why are certain moves harder to layer than others? What moves are best to begin learning layering with? We’ll practice slow layers, fast layers, traveling layers and POLYRHYTHMIC layers (What!? Don’t worry, you’ll find out soon…). This workshop is intended to be physically and intellectually challenging. Various levels of difficulty will be offered so that participants can practice at their own pace.

Ashley Lopez: Shimmy Workshop
(All-Levels)

Is your shimmy weak or missing? Can you shimmy, but have trouble adding smooth arms on top? Is your shimmy stuck in one place…so you have trouble making shapes or traveling with it? Ever wonder what the difference between an up/down shimmy, a twist shimmy, and a 3/4 shimmy is? Would you like to learn specific exercises designed to help you build the muscles necessary to make your shimmy strong and consistent?

During the first section of class we’ll focus on exercises that will train your “shimmy” muscles, and then we’ll explore those muscles with simple, specific movement drills. Once your motor is running smoothly, we will begin to add complexity through layers (arms, upper-body isolations and shapes, undulations and hip shapes as well!) Next, let’s take a walk…traveling with shimmies is challenging but is one of the quintessential bellydance steps. Learn several different ways of moving around with your shimmies. As time allows, we will tie it all up with a nice combo that will remind you of all the possibilities and take it home to make it your own!
